Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classes come from underserved, low-income communities in Richmond, CA. The composition of my classroom is 90% Latino, 5% African American, and 5% other. As a school, 85% of the students receive free lunch and are bused in. They aspire to be first generation college attendees, generally work hard, and are great kids. Like many high school students, they suffer from stress, anxiety and depression from the pressures of school and external factors such as their home life/neighborhood.
I want to start my class in a focused and calm manner.
One way to do this is to begin the class practicing mindfulness. Research has shown that teaching students strategies to help calm themselves down will help them throughout life, especially during stressful times. Ultimately, I would like to teach them life-long lessons of wellness with the help of mindfulness. I'm seeking props and books on teaching wellness and mindfulness.
My Project
I want to practice mindfulness twice a week with my high school students. Having guided activities and props to help with breathing will ease my students in this new weekly practice.
Teaching them ways to manage their stress, anxiety and depression will give them necessary tools in in achieving optimum health and wellness.
I already have yoga cushions and now I'm interested in providing them positive affirmation props to ease them into mindfulness and lead thoughtful discussions. I believe if my students know how to manage their own stress at early age, they will not need to seek solace in destructive behaviors such as drugs and alcohol. Most of my students come from rough neighborhoods, and I want to teach them self-coping skills to deal with trauma.
