Once a student enters middle school, a love of reading should already be set in place. As a reading teacher, I would like to continue this love of reading as well as encourage reluctant readers that they too can develop a passion for reading. My sixth graders need high-interest texts that foster a love for reading!
As Kate DiCamillo said so eloquently, "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, or a duty: it should be offered as a gift."
As sixth graders, students should not only be reading to learn but reading for pleasure as well. As a reading teacher, I want to instill a voracious appetite for reading. Reading authentic and engaging texts will assist my students in making a year's growth in their independent reading.
Acquiring age-appropriate and high-interest text that includes multiple genres would immerse them in high quality reading all day.
My Project
A variety of age-appropriate high-interest books are essential for middle school readers. The books that I have selected will encourage all middle school students to develop an enthusiasm for reading as well as creating a text-rich environment giving each student ownership in their own reading.
When we provide students with choices in their reading, they make their own decisions and they feel empowered and important.
Empowering students to choose in these early experiences sets them up for success as lifelong readers. Providing students with choice in their reading also encourages meaningful discussions and rich conversations.
Having a variety of texts available to students have many positive impacts on students. This empowerment, once fostered, will not only be seen in the classroom, it will carry over to reading for pleasure at home as well!
