My Students

My students hail from the beautiful city of Thomasville, Georgia where they attend a M.E.R.I.T. 6th grade Earth science class. The M.E.R.I.T. program offers gifted and high achieving students in grades 5-12. Known as Maximizing Education to Realize Intellectual Transformation, the main goal of MERIT is to challenge students to achieve their maximum academic potential while providing a supportive learning environment.

These students choose to push themselves academically within classes that accelerate instruction while participating in fine arts, athletics, extracurricular and social functions.

Within my specific 6th grade Earth science class, it is my goal that students will learn to think like scientists as we look at problem solving and solution finding! With that said, the students never cease to amaze me with their abilities to think outside of the box, ask content-pushing questions and achieve even beyond what they are asked!

My Project

These heat lamp bulbs will be used to model the solar energy of our Sun! By gaining the ability to model the Sun's light students will collect and record temperature data on how fast sand and water heat and cool. This experiment gives students the opportunity to see for themselves how radiant energy drives convection within the atmosphere and oceans, thus producing winds and changing weather conditions! Additionally, by using these heat bulbs students will be able to collect accurate and faster data. The heat lamps will replace standard light bulbs therefore creating a stronger learning activity for these students!
