Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students thrive. Even in situations where one might understand or even expect a child to give up, my students persevere. At the end of last year, when my school announced a merger with another school from our campus, students from both schools spearheaded the drive toward unification. These teenagers came together fighting to maintain the best of each school and to create a new school - their school.
I am in awe of what my students have already accomplished - passing AP exams, interning at NYC hospitals, growing their own food in the school garden, even beekeeping.
Over the past few months, I've watched students achieve goals they weren't sure were achievable. I've seen young people take ownership of their community and demand better when they deserve. With the right supplies, my students are capable of anything!
My Project
This year has been nothing short of amazing! My students, my co-teacher, and I have shared laughter and tears, happiness and devastations. For the first time in my classroom, we've done a wonderful job of documenting our growth such that each student is able to recognize their own accomplishments. One way in which we've been capturing our best moments is through photography. We've been able to use resources from past Donors Choose projects to print beautiful images of the learning that takes place in our classroom. That's where this new project comes in. We've run out of color ink and envelopes that we use to send pictures home with our students. My students love receiving pictures of themselves in the classroom, and parents love being able to see their children in action.
My students made spectacular memories that they will value throughout their lives.
We have made enormous strides forward - both in our academic learning and in our social & emotional development. We've made enormous messes - hence the need for more Clorox wipes - but we've always cleaned them up and came out stronger because of them. With your help, my students will be able to carry their memories of this year with them into the summer and beyond!
