My classroom is made up of twenty two very different students. We live in a rural area where some have more than others. However, we don't let that define us!
In our classroom we focus on kindness, responsibility and working together.
My students love working together and interacting! They enjoy playing math games with one another as well as working together in their literacy centers. In our classroom we understand that working together and being kind is one of the most important things we can learn.
My Project
I have been reading about making students learning count. How can I make sure my students are engaged? I have so much to compete with when it comes to their outside world that I want to make sure they are just as engaged with my lesson as they are with their video games.
Changing the students environment and doing something unexpected will capture their attention and create a link to that material that they will be able to pull on for years to come.
With the materials I have requested I plan to have many different lessons. I would like to use the surgical hats, gowns and masks to create an operating room within our classroom. With these props we will transform ourselves into doctors to do “surgery” on words, specifically contractions. We will cut them apart and sew them back together. Another lesson is to use the pie pans, table clothes and chef hats to become pie bakers. We will use this lesson to understand the authors purpose for writing, also known as PIE. Finally, the glow sticks, neon tape and vests will be used to create a black light review game. Students will have to show mastery of different content before they are able to collect a glow stick or play a glowing game.
I feel this will help to create life long learners. They will know that a lesson doesn’t have to be the same old worksheet but can have fun sprinkled in. Without engagement students will forget the lesson the second it starts.
