60% of the students in my class lost their homes and belongings in Hurricane Harvey. In addition, they lost their classroom too. We began school a month later than planned at a local church in town.
My students are brave and adaptable.
These are just a few words I could use to describe them. They have embraced this year and have made the best out of the traumatic time in their short little lives. I cannot say enough good things about this sweet little class.
My Project
Every year, I make each student in my class a memory book. It is a collection of their most prized work and a piece from each month along the way through their kindergarten year . I also include pictures. Some books end up being 50 pages long.
The problem is, the supplies I use to make these memory books were lost in Hurricane Harvey when our school flooded.
I would use the binding machine to bind the collection of memories together neatly. The cardstock will be used for drawings and backing of art projects already completed that I have saved. The lamination pouches will help secure these memories for years to come. The glue gun will allow for the memories and pictures to be attached firmly in the book. The ink will allow me to print the pictures and other things that add to the memory book. The students cherish this memory book. We use them in class the last two weeks of school to reflect on the year. The children look through the books and write about their achievements and areas they still wish to improve on. Not to mention their parents love these books. They cry when they see them.
This school year has been filled with many memories before and after the storm. I am excited to have the oppurtunity to regain the supplies it will take to put these wonderful memory books together this year after all.
