Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a low-income school with a diverse and transient population. Many coming to the school have parents who speak a language other that English, and many students attend ELL classes here. Some of our students attend from kindergarten to 5th grade, but our school is mainly within a low socio-economic neighborhood.
My students enjoy singing and playing instruments in the various classroom settings, and are very enthusiastic about performing!
Our special groups here include a 4th/5th grade choir with about 50 students. The entire building participates in various all-school assemblies, such as a Veteran's Day Musical Tribute, Christmas performance/sing-a-long, and spring talent show. Each grade level also has the opportunity to perform individually in their annual concert.
My Project
Joia Tubes are very similar to instruments used by Blue Man Group - pitched tubes of different lengths that are used to play melodies, bass lines, and harmonies. They can be combined with xylophones, resonator bells, boomwhackers, piano, and singing.
Every new element that I introduce into my classroom is intended to be used as a building block - a tool to engage their attention and imagination.
I work towards creating both daily lessons and school performances that include high-quality music repertoire, enhanced by interesting and fun instrumental accompaniments. Joia Tubes will work well alongside my current inventory, and they are color-coded to match my current bell kits and music books.
