My students need organized, functional lit centers. The easel is to jot down their ideas, the lounging items (futon and pillows) are for comfort, and the small containers are their reading toolkits—sticky notes, novels, and so forth.
My 4th grade explorers are very kind and caring. They enjoy learning and exploring through hands-on activities and through technology. We appreciate a good laugh and are very creative and inspired.
At our public charter, we are striving to promote appreciation of our national heritage through scholar empowered learning and fostering creativity and entrepreneurial spirit!
I have wide range of grade-level skills as well as interests. Keeping them engaged through hands-on lessons and moving through the classroom benefits them most. I love their "Aha!" moments and witnessing them experience success in areas they may have struggled with before.
My Project
Our main goal in class is to be able to access material in a multitude of ways. In doing so, I structure my lessons to accommodate my high level scholars through meaningful extensions and reflections on their work in the classroom. In addition, I always offer a means to revisit concepts that were misunderstood or not understood at all. All of which will be supported by the tools that I have requested in this project.
"Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers."-Harry S Truman.
Being able to access literature in various contexts not only reaches those seemingly unreachable scholars, but also takes the stress off from decoding those words and allows them to sit back and enjoy. Listening to reading is the perfect way to allow for mentoring that improves vocabulary, fluency, and challenging concepts of literary devices within a text. The materials I picked for this project include a futon and comfy pillows to set the cozy atmosphere. The headphones are to replace the headphones provided by our school, but have since broken. The easel is for scholars to jot down their findings or discoveries based upon our mini lesson of the week and thus applying those skills or strategies to the book that they are enjoying. Lastly, the small plastic containers are the perfect size for individual reading toolkits (novels, sticky notes, etc.) . All of these tools help my scholars make the most of their centers in making connections with the text, enjoying the atmosphere all while staying organized with their tools easily accessible.
With this project, I am looking to create a comfortable, relaxing environment in which my scholars will be able to listen to reading while having the tools readily accessible to make meaningful connections to the books they come to love!
