Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of 24 vibrant Transition Kindergarten students in an urban neighborhood. All students at our school receive a free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. Most are learning English as their second language. For most, my classroom is their first school experience. They arrive at school every day eager to learn and grow.
They are our schools youngest learners and need a balanced curriculum with both play and academics in order to reach their potential.
They are always excited to try new things.
My Project
My teaching style relies heavily on music and movement to help students remain engaged and internalize concepts. While managing 25 kindergarten students, it is difficult to be constantly juggling and fumbling with CDs. It is much more efficient to use an MP3 player, where I can get to all my music with one touch. Due to a theft a few years ago, I lost most of my music and MP3 player. My students are missing out on some amazing songs. Currently, we are listening to our music on an old set of computer speakers that often don't work. The bluetooth speaker will allow for uninterrupted listening. The CDs I am requesting are by children’s artists such as Greg and Steve and Jack Hartmann, known for inspiring kids to learn and move at the same time. The majority of my students are English learners and music is one of the most effective ways to build English vocabulary.
