Help me give my students an engaging math experience. The math manipulatives I will purchase through this grant will allow the students to explore the PreKindergarten math standards through a hands-on learning experience.
I teach PreKindergarten at an elementary school in Florida. We are a neighborhood school with over 900 students. Last year 98% of our students were economically disadvantaged.
I teach a diverse group of students, for many English is their second language.
I have 20 students in my Pre-Kindergarten classroom per semester, teaching a total of 40 students per year. I teach an inclusion PreK program.
For most of my students this is their first experience in a public school. Through the implementation of this grant, I will be able to provide a hands on learning experience for my students. My goal, is that the students leave Pre-Kindergarten with a love for learning. I know that I have the opportunity to instill a love for school and learning.
My Project
This grant would provide Math supplies that will be utilized throughout the PreKindergarten program. I have two semesters of students each year. This program will meet the needs of 40 students each year! The materials will provide important hands-on learning that will encourage a deeper understanding of concepts such as counting, patterning, number recognition, number sense and most importantly instill a love for math! This opportunity to investigate on their own using manipulatives provides an opportunity that cannot be presented in any other way, verbal or written. PreKindergarten students need the interaction with the materials.
Many of the Math concepts presented during the prekindergarten year are very difficult skills to grasp without the aid of manipulatives.
Based on the scores from the PreKindergarten students last year, math was one of the lowest performing areas, consistently scores very low on the Math standardized tests required by the state. I believe these Math manipulatives would not only provide a clearer avenue for learning but also give them more opportunity to practice skills so desperately needed for success
