Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of my students come from low income, under-served communities. They struggle to reach grade level in math and many feel as if they can't do it at all. Many of my students come to my class not wanting to participate for fear of not knowing an answer and at times are afraid to even try. They want to do well. They want to succeed but some just don't know how. My students are funny, they are kind, they are loving and they are my children.
Every day in my class is an adventure.
Some days are easier than others but every day is full of learning and growth. My students aren't allowed to say "I can't". I don't believe in that and by the end of the year they don't believe in it either. My hope for every student is that all of my students not only grow in math but also grow in confidence and their love of learning.
My Project
My students will be able to work hands-on with the objectives they are learning. The manipulatives will help make abstract ideas concrete. They will be able to connect concepts in a variety of different ways. The manipulatives will help me reach the different ways students learn.
The manipulatives will also allow my students to take ownership of their learning.
When they are struggling with a concept they will be able to reach for the fraction tiles or circles or other tools to help them arrive at the answer on their own. This will help build their confidence and will allow them different avenues to learning.
