Located in Grant County, Kentucky, our school is home to children from many different socioeconomic backgrounds.
We are a Title 1 school with 72% of students on free or reduced price lunch.
My classroom is home to 21 first graders (10 girls/11 boys). Although the students range from a high to low socioeconomic background, they all do an amazing job of working together and helping one and other when needed. We refer to our classroom as a family because we share so much love and respect for one and other.
In our classroom we do a lot of partner "turn and talk time" to engage students and incorporate higher-order-thinking. They have learned how to start conversations and respond to others using great manners. We practice this daily at our morning meetings as we greet one another.
My Project
Manipulatives such as addition/subtraction wrap-ups, geometric shape building sets, ten-frames, rekenreks, number balances, and fact family cards give students the valuable hands-on learning experiences that all students need to help build their number sense skills.
Dot pattern cards, and ten-frames help build students' subitizing skills and early numeracy concepts.
When students are able to instantly recognize numbers, they not only form perceptual knowledge of numbers, but also construct a conceptual understanding of them.
Number balances and addition/subtraction wrap-up cards provide students with the opportunity to practice math facts, self-correct, and understand how the numbers work together.
Geometric shape building sets are a valuable resource to have students create 2D and 3D shapes, and be able to see the defining attributes of those shapes, such as number of sides, faces, and vertices.
With these manipulatives, my students will be mathematicians!
