My students need math manipulatives (e.g. time bingo, place value magnets, geometric shapes, etc.) and general classroom supplies (e.g. black expo pens, partitions, etc).
Math manipulatives? Where are they? As much as my students appreciate using their whiteboards and expos, they're just not just enough to bring math to life to their 25 inquiring minds.
My high-energy students learn best when they get their hands busy and playing.
Learning through game-play gives my students opportunities to be engaged, which helps make it easier for them to commit themselves to their learning.
My students come from a tight-knit community in Hawaii and they attend an International Baccalaureate Candidate School.
My Project
My students are struggling to focus with the materials they have. Our whiteboards and pens can only help maintain their engagement as much as they can.
With these manipulatives, my students can have math in their hands to pick apart, to put together, to collect data, compare numbers, to tell time, work without distractions, and so much more! For example, when we begin to learn more about fractions and decimals, we can use the place value cards to look at equivalency, comparisons, and using the four operations to manipulate them. We can use the Write and Wipe Clocks and Time Bingo to help each other familiarize ourselves with and practice telling/measuring time. We can collect measurement data using measuring tape and we can then represent that data.
We could also do so much more together if we had enough materials for all 25 of us. My students will be able to play more interactive games and we could also manipulate math together as a class during instruction
With these resources, not only will my students be learning math but they'll also be learning lifelong skills.
Having math manipulatives to play games and activities will open the door to providing my students with more collaborative learning experiences that promote teamwork and cooperation. These are two skills that are valuable in every day life that will further encourage my students to cooperate with others to problem solve and develop a sense of appreciation towards others.
