Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade at a Title I, public elementary school in Orange County. I have 35 amazing, curious learners in my room. Unfortunately, most of my class is below grade level in both reading and math.
Poverty is an issue that many of my students face - over 90% of the students at my school receive free lunch and many are homeless.
While my students' parents have the desire to contribute to my class and want what's best for their child, they are financially unable to help me.
My Project
5th grade math is not the easiest subject to teach or to learn. Many concepts are abstract and hard for 10 and 11-year-olds to comprehend. My school has some of the lowest state math test scores in our entire district. Having hands-on math manipulative would help my struggling learners.
Having items to touch would really make the learning come alive in my classroom and help reinforce what I already teach.
These discovery kits cover the main topics taught in 5th grade: fractions, decimals, volume, multiplication, division, and measurement. I would use these kits to have students work in small groups on a particular concept.
