Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school strives to lead every student to have a royal attitude. To be Respectful, to Own their actions, have a Yes you can attitude, be Accepting, and to be a Leader. I try to help every one of my students get there by providing a comfortable classroom with supplies so every student has access to what they need.
My classes consist of dozens of students putting forth their best effort to learn math.
On a daily basis I see English Language learners, homeless students, many students receiving various special services, and everyone of them juggling their personal lives with their desire to learn. The school I teach at is 100% free lunches, and many families are not able to refill their students supplies as they run out. My goal with this project is to create a classroom atmosphere where every student feels welcome, and no student has to worry about providing their own supplies.
My Project
These supplies will go into a well deserved classroom. Students already come into a math classroom with anxiety about the content, I do not want to add more by not providing the essentials and some to their learning environment. Math classes need to the basic supplies, but what about games for inside recess that make you think, or seats that allow you to fidget?
Games like Chess, Farkle, and Dominos are on the list to allow students something to do during inside recess that also fosters their critical thinking skills.
Interactive notebooks and colored pencils help visual and artistic students learn a subject that is not always that way. It is no secret that middle school students need to move around, so instead of fighting that I am equipping each desk with a fidget device like a wobble cushion or elastic band so they can move and work at the same time.
