If you walked by our classroom you’d see 21 five and six year olds spread out all over the room engaged in various activities. Partners might be making words out of Play Doh, building structures with blocks, listening to a story while laying on the carpet, working on computers or iPads, or sitting around the table reading with their teacher. We are loud and we are learning!
Each of my students has their own set of experiences that make them unique.
We have children who speak Chinese, Spanish, Arabic and Zomi. One third of my students are English Language Learners or come from dual language homes. Some of my little ones have never been away from their family before. Others spend hours after school in day care programs until their parents are done with work. I have children who are free and reduced due to family hardship. Some of my children are from single family homes and other are from blended families or dual parent households. Together, no matter our personal experiences, we are learning how to become a school family, how to learn from and respect each other.
My Project
How many people do you meet that will openly admit to disliking math as a child, or even as an adult? I don’t want a single child from my classroom to ever consider disliking math. Frustration comes from facts and formulas to be memorized that don’t make sense to the learner.
In kindergarten we learn the basic math skills that all future skills will build upon.
They learn to count, identity numbers, put groups of objects together and break them apart. They learn more and less, addition and subtraction, time, and money. A firm understanding requires transferring concrete objects to abstract thought.
The ETA daily math fluency kit will help my students understand basic math concepts with concrete examples. The number strings and math talks will help me provide clear and systematic instruction for my young learners. The demonstration materials will enhance instruction and provide hands-on learning for my students.
