I have been teaching for the past 20 years and have enjoyed working with such a diverse population of students. I currently have a group of 26 students and more than 50% of my students are English Language Learners. They enter the classroom with such a great deal of motivation and an eagerness to learn. However, for the majority of them struggle with math and word problems as they learn best through visual representations. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find money available in our school system for books and other hands-on materials that are so vital to connect our students with real world experiences.
Allowing my students the opportunity to read and to see math in action is going to help them learn to enjoy math so much more.
Students often struggle with word problems and understanding how to relate math to the real world.
These books will not only encourage and enhance their reading skills but will allow my students to see the connection between mathematics and their everyday lives. These books use visuals and show examples of how math is used to solve problems they may face each and every day.
Many of my students struggle with the complexity of math so having the opportunity to read about it and discuss problems is something these students would benefit from immensely.
