One of the most difficult aspects of teaching math is catching and holding the interest of students. Many of them see the subject as a series of boring rules to be memorized and repeated back at test time. My high school students are no exception. In order to combat this misconception, I want to fill my course with experiments and activities that catch their interest and make the math they are learning come alive. My school is one of the few remaining large (about 3500 students) high schools in the Bronx. The vast majority of students come from low-income families. Due to budgets constraints, there are few opportunities for students to perform experiments in math or even science class. Math classes already have sets of TI-83 calculators for students. In most classrooms, these sit unused because there are few ways to integrate them into our basic algebra curriculum. However, with CBL units and accessories, we could perform experiments using motion, light, temperature and sound. Right now, I struggle to convince students to arrive at school early each morning, achieving only small success coaxing them to school through sheer perseverance. If I had exciting and engaging experiments where students solidify their understanding of math while working with calculators, I envision students beating down my door before 8:00 am every morning for a few extra minutes of technology and discovery. This semester alone, I will teach about 150 students. With the use of CBL equipment, I hope to create a classroom that inspires all of them to learn and develop an excitement for their education.
