I am a fourth grade Math/Science teacher at Wendell Elementary. Our school has a very diverse population of students with a wide range of abilities. My classroom consists of students in our growing English as a Second Language program, students with learning disabilities, and all the way up to students who are academically gifted.
This year we have an exciting new Math program which has tons of integration into all subject areas. I enjoy helping my students realize that when they read, write, and talk about Math they increase their understanding of mathematics.
My students have really enjoyed our new Math program and I love to integrate with Math, but I need some help getting the books necessary to do so. I would like to have these books in my classroom to help enhance and extend the lessons. Students will have access to these books daily, with opportunities to read them independently, in small groups, as well as whole-class.
Each book is directly related to math concepts being studied. The first book that I would like to share with the students is "How Much is a Million" by David M. Schwartz. This book does a great job of helping students visualize how much a million goldfish and a million stars is, how tall a million students would be if they climbed onto one another's shoulders, etc.
This piece of literature would provide a great introduction to our measurement unit. Students could then measure each other's height and we could figure out the height of all the students in our class if we stood on top of one another's shoulders. Students could then make predictions about how tall it would be if all the students in fourth grade or all the students in our school climbed onto one another's shoulders. Since large numbers are difficult for students to visualize, this would be a great activity for students to relate large numbers as well as practice their measurement skills and making predictions.
I am hoping that since these books go so well with these Math lessons, the students will continue to get excited about Math as well as Reading. Please help fund this project to help our students be successful with Math and continue to enjoy learning!
