My Students

My students are in kindergarten, first and second grade. They are young and energetic. They enjoy play-based learning, hands-on activities and interactive lessons. They love, love, love to move! In fact, most of them learn best through movement. They spend part of their day in my special education classroom and the rest of the day in class with their peers. In my room, I strive to provide my young learners with engaging instruction in a comfortable, fun environment. I want them to enjoy learning, feel good about themselves, and reach their full academic potential.

My Project

Math can be a challenging, and sometimes frustrating, subject for the students in my K-2 special education classroom. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. Manipulatives are the key to making math accessible to all students, especially those in the early grades. As soon as I make math interactive, visual, and hands-on, my students begin to grasp concepts.

Hands-on math materials and manipulatives turn abstract concepts into concrete, meaningful learning experiences for my students.

The rekenreks, number balance, and Cuisenaire rods will allow my students to understand addition and subtraction facts rather than just memorize them. The 120 board will allow my students to develop understanding of counting to 120, place value, and counting patterns through hands on activities. The double dice will be used for a variety of math fact games. With these hands-on materials, the opportunities for learning math will be endless.
