Learning gives each child the opportunity to discover new and exciting worlds of information around us. I am a 2nd grade teacher at a rural elementary school. I love seeing the bright and shiny faces of each of my beautiful students. Unfortunately when some of my wonderful kids hear the words, "It is time for Math" their bright and shiny faces turn dull and sad. Math should not have to be that way. I have grown up loving the excitement of learning how Math is used in our every day life. I would love to be able to share that same desire and excitement with my students.
The problem I face in doing this is that I have found that in order to create this excitement and love for learning Math, I have to be creative with how I teach it. If I just sit up at the front of the classroom and lecture all day, my students will always have the dull and lifeless face I just described. If I instead tailor to what my students enjoy , they will be much more excited about discovering the joy of Math. I know that I can do this but it will take many resources to accomplish. I just don't have the ability to fund all those resources. I wish I had the money to do all I can for my little ones, but in order for me to find the money I will need much help.
The items I am requesting are two sets of activities that the students can work on independently or with a small group and myself. The first set is a practice game sheet where the students would be able to practice difficult concepts while at the same time trying to decipher a puzzle. This will help them use these math concepts in a real life situation. The other resource is a set of activities to use in a small group along with other students. This activity will give children the opportunity to work cooperatively in a group to discover different math concepts. This will hopefully give them the tools to see how some times it is better to achieve a goal together rather than on your own.
