Help us to make "Math Marvelous" for children with varying disabilities. Pencil and paper tasks are not always easy and there are often fine motor weaknesses that impact this ability. Children with special needs benefit from much repetition with hands on materials to learn a new task.
Our classroom is a 12:1:2 special education classroom located in an elementary school, in upstate NY.
We have children from ages 5-7, grades K and 1, with several different disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Down Syndrome. We offer inclusion opportunities in both the regular kindergarten and first grade classrooms, as appropriate, on an individual basis.
My Project
Providing us with these hands on math materials will allow opportunities for these children to explore and learn in a much better way than a workbook format. These special needs children have significant delays in fine motor skills, making it difficult for them to always produce work in written format. With these requested materials we can provide learning centers that are fun, educational and hands on! Learning the basic math skills of counting, measuring, adding and subtracting is an important skill for lifelong achievement! These skills are used in many daily life activities and are a necessity for these children to learn!
With so many state budget cuts, it makes it difficult for classroom teachers to purchase all of the necessary supplies for optimal teaching in their classrooms.
Much of my budget allowance is applicable to textbooks only and not allowed to be used for manipulative type items. Therefore any support you can give would be greatly appreciated! Your donation to this project will help me to help teach all of my special needs children in the way they learn best!
