We have around 400 students at Star Center. Many who are open enrolled (around 13%) who choose to come to our school because of it’s wonderful reputation. 46% of the student population is economically disadvantaged, almost 23% of the population are students with disabilities and about 8% of students have limited English proficiency. However, our students are amazing, wonderful and inspiring people, they show huge growth in math. Their hard work and determination has helped our school to earn an amazing 5 star rating on the state report card. Math is my passion and it is my mission to help my kids love math just as much as I do! Whether they come to work with me in a small intervention group or I work with them in a co-taught class, they will greatly benefit from the ability to use manipulatives and games deepen their understanding of math!
My Project
These engaging manipulatives and math games are powerful tools that will be used my math intervention groups, as well as in my co-taught math classes. These supplies can also be checked out by classroom teachers to use with their students!
By developing a love of math through fun, hands-on materials and integrating the Social Emotional Learning competencies, I will increase student's future ability to learn math!
Math fact games, such as 7 ate 9, Clumsy Thief Candy Store, Qwitch, Sum Swamp, and Check the Fridge, and Sea 10! make learning math facts fun and engaging! These fact games will be used across grade levels as they can be modified to use with different age levels and needs. When students have automaticity with math facts, it frees up working memory for new math concepts. Students' attitude towards learning math facts and self-efficacy will improve because these games are captivating!
Over the years, I've found that many of my students struggle with math in their classroom because they either do not have their math facts memorized or they have poor visual spatial abilities.
I will use Logic Roots Monkey Fractions, Fold & Learn Geometric Shapes, Angles Hands-on Measurement Tools, Build & Learn Volume Set, Pattern Blocks and Pattern Block Cards, and Mathlink Cubes to help improve students visual spatial abilities. I'm excitied to use the Fold & Learn Geometric shapes with both 1st graders, who are just learning about 3D shapes, and 5th graders, who are just learning about fractions! Students across all grade levels (4K - 5) and abilities need opportunities to learn math in a concrete fashion using manipulatives before they attempt to learn it in a more abstract manor.
Research shows that students with a positive attitude towards math show an increased in overall math ability.
