I have the wonderful opportunity of looping (moving up a grade level) with my class this upcoming year, so I know this bunch of kiddos extremely well, and boy are they are an incredible group of students.
They are exceptionally bright, witty, energetic and compassionate.
They are English Language Learners, Talented and Gifted students and students who receive special education services. They are bilingual, hearing-impaired, and have unique medical circumstances.
My students come to school eager to learn despite difficult home lives. 100% of my students receive free and reduced-price lunch and we are a Title 1 school. I am certain these students will do amazing things and make a difference in their lives, and every day I am trying to make a difference in their lives.
My Project
My students are in need of one iPad and a protective case in order to build more engagement, a deeper understanding and a sense of ownership and pride with their work.
This iPad will enable students to project and share their math thinking with their peers, leading to higher engagement, richer mathematical discourse and stronger understandings.
With our new math adoption last year came textbooks. While we are loving the new curriculum, the textbook can be dry and students will often lose focus quickly or become disengaged. An iPad will allow me to display lessons and manipulate them. For example, instead of having students just read out of their math textbook to follow along, they will be able to view my projection of the lesson and watch me highlight, circle, and work through a problem in real-time. The iPad will allow students to stay on task, follow along, and provide me with an opportunity to interact with the lesson. As students work through problems currently, I am having to stop and pause the class in order to have them gather around a student's desk in order to see their work. Having an iPad would enable students to quickly project their math thinking to the front of the room, leaving more time for students to make connections and more opportunities for multiple strategies for solving problems.
In addition, having an iPad in the class could help with multiplication and division fluency with the use of certain apps.
