Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of children that live in New Mexico, a state riddled with very high childhood poverty levels. Each year, my classroom represents many cultures, backgrounds, and compelling personalities. They are young, inquisitive, kind, creative, and talented! I enjoy serving the youngest students (age 4-6) because of the unique opportunity to foster early both their love of learning and intrinsic thirst for knowledge. I know I play an instrumental role in setting my students up for a lifelong love of learning! My state has decreased educational spending over the years and much of the money allocated for public education doesn’t go directly to the classroom. For this reason, DonorsChoose.org has been instrumental in helping my students reach their full potential. Desperately needed resources purchased by generous citizen philanthropists on DonorsChoose go directly to my classroom and immediately into the hands of students!
My Project
Math is so important and can bring important real world skills to students. Research is showing first grade math skills positively correlate with future math skills. This isn’t to say students shouldn’t approach math with a growth mindset and vigor to learn. We can help students perseverance and success at math by fostering math talks in our classroom. An ability to have hands-on math learning experiences while talking about mathematical thinking makes space for deeper learning, applied learning, and room for safe mistakes. Having ten frames, a magnetic easel/whiteboard, class rekenreks, and manipulatives will make learning more tangible and more fun! Students learn by doing. This easel will allow me the opportunity to model and foster conversations about math and our thinking during problem solving! These items help students work within our system of tens and are essential for building basic number sense! Thanks for considering to help!
