Our math program makes math fun but it needs your help. We have a math unit that teaches students math by asking them to program calculators. It may be simple but it is serious fun. In our Algebra I class at Leadership High School we have students examine mathematical concepts and apply what they have learned to a calculator programming problem. Leadership is a school that serves mostly urban youth and we find it is often difficult to get students hooked on math. However, when the students are solving a programming problem and applying their math skills to a real life issue, you can see their enthusiasm come to life. You can literally witness the growth of math geeks. In order for our calculator programming unit to become a reality we need some materials. Students will be in teams of four to six and they will need to share a calculator. Teachers use a calculator that can be placed on an overhead projector which projects an image that students can see and learn from. Teachers also need a screen for the calculator projection because our classrooms are old and without many amenities. In recent educational research there has been some evidence that students that pass Algebra I are far more likely to succeed in all of their subjects as well as later in life. This is why it is vital that we provide exciting and educational Algebra classes to our urban students. Getting turned on by programming a calculator makes a huge difference in these student's lives, even if they don't love math, at first. Be a part of making math geeks by funding this project.
