Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5th graders in a Northwest side neighborhood in a large city in Illinois. We are a public school with a large Hispanic population. My class receives free lunch based on low family income. My students are second language learners and diverse learners with cultural backgrounds from Mexico, and other South American countries.
We are a very proud and diverse classroom family.
My classes consist of many diverse learners that have various levels of English language development and learning disabilities such as ADHD and Autism.
My Project
My students will be able to participate in a hands-on learning center to enhance their math understanding of angles and geometric shapes by using the Angles & Symmetry Discovery Can from Lakeshore Learning Materials and the Anglegs Regular Student Set from School Specialty. These materials allow students to create angles and shapes. They will use the Decimals Discovery Can from Lakeshore Learning Materials to help build on their skills in using decimals in numeric expressions using all four operations.
My English language learners will increase their use of English math vocabulary through discussion and problem-solving from the use of the Number Talk Daily Activity Center from Lakeshore Learning Materials.
They will work in small groups to develop critical math thinking and participation by using the Common Core Collaborative Cards for Algebraic Thinking. The Learning Palette Base Center Kit will give my students the opportunity to review previously learned skills in a fun interactive setting.
My diverse learners will be able to work with me to model and solve math problems using the Tiles Tub Number Tiles w/Mathematical Symbols from School Specialty. These tiles will allow my students to tactile numbers to create and solve problems using all four math operations. They will be able to demonstrate their thinking by using the Dry Erase Wipe Boards with an X/Y Axis and the Magnetic Dry Erase Erasers from School Specialty to write out and solve math problems. All of these materials will give my math students the chance to LEARN by DOING. Thank You!
