My students are from a rural community in Maine. We attend a public school where 63% of students are economically disadvantaged. I have been an elementary school teacher in grades 1, 2, 4, and 5 for 18 years. I have now decided to take a position at our middle school working with students in grades 6th grade ELA and 7th grade Math. Math is a complicated content that many of our youth do not grasp easily. Currently, 80% of our 7th graders are below grade level in math according to our State Assessment. I want to help my students see that they DO have the skills to problem solve and think outside the box. Many give up before trying because the math work looks so intimidating. Our current math curriculum is VERY daunting and extremely wordy. For students who have literacy struggles (which sadly are many also), they are not making gains in math because it takes too much to get through reading it and figuring out what is asked of them. I REALLY want to enhance their math skills with as many engaging math lessons and activities that I can to help them see that they CAN do it!
My Project
My 7th grade math students are significantly below grade level in math. Their confidence in math is low and I want to do all I can to help build their self-esteem and their skills along with it. These hands on activities will help make instruction more engaging.
Most professions in our booming world require strong math skills, and our students deserve the proper teachings to help gain skills and confidence in this area.
Students struggle with math and become frustrated causing them to stop persevering. I have found that when I create more engaging, hands-on activities student put in more effort and in turn are practicing and learning the skills needed.
These varieties of centers, escape rooms and other activities will supplement my curriculum and provide more opportunities for students to learn these necessary skills.
