When you were in elementary school, I bet you couldn't wait until it was time for Math. This is just the kind of environment I am trying to create in my fifth grade classroom. I have taught for fifteen years in a high poverty, Title I school. The students come from varying backgrounds, many of which do not put a high value on education. There is much pressure put on the students to pass the state standardized test, but some students are not motivated to learn the standards needed to pass such a high stakes test.
Our school is currently very focused on literacy and has a great literacy library with hundreds of books available to the students. Unfortunately, there are few hands-on supplies available for math activities. When given hands-on materials to learn concepts such as fractions, probability, algebra, and geometry concepts, students become highly motivated to learn.
I am asking for tangrams to teach fractions and geometry concepts. Dice and playing cards can be used to teach a variety of concepts from basic facts to probability. I am also asking for books that contain ideas for math games using cards and dice. My fifth graders will benefit by using hands-on activities to learn important math concepts which will in turn make math fun for them!
Your help will ensure that my students become motivated to learn important math concepts in an environment that makes math fun and memorable.
