My students need math books like Round is a Mooncake A Book of Shapes, Bear Counts, Equal Shmequal, and other similar books. My students also need math manipulatives like Size & Color Bug Counters, and Giant Sand Timer for our math block.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are energetic, active learners. They attend a Title I school and their parents often struggle to buy supplies, uniforms, and provide lunch. The parents do try their best to send their children to school every day so they can get a proper education, meals, and exercise and play in a safe environment.
The students try hard at everything they do, from in the classroom to on the playground, because they like school and feel safe at school.
The teachers try equally as hard because we know they are our future and need dedicated educators who care about their success and well-being.
My Project
My students need math books like Round is a Mooncake A Book of Shapes, Bear Counts, Equal Shmequal, and other similar books. My students also need math manipulatives like Size & Color Bug Counters, and Giant Sand Timer for our math block. My students love math time. They love it because they get to use manipulatives, they get to work with their friends, and we always share multiple ways to get the answers. They also love story-time because the books we read are silly and engaging.
We want to incorporate our two favorite activities into one by having math read alouds during our math block.
Math books are a great way to introduce a new topic. There is usually a strong story element with math embedded into. "The Greedy Triangle" is a funny book to begin our study of geometry. The more we learn more about the topic, we then read a book with a problem in it and try to solve the problem independently. The book "Just a Little Bit" is a book about an ant and an elephant playing see-saw and to help get the elephant up, another animal joins the ant until finally the elephant the goes up. After reading this book, we weigh something heavy like a water bottle and slowly add cubes until the water bottle is lighter. Lastly, I put the books we have read in our library section of our classroom so the students can read the books anytime they like.
