My students need fun, hands on games to practice math skills. Molkky, a fun outdoor game, is a class favorite and with multiple sets of this game, math learning can extend to everyone all at once! They also need the games Mobi and Yardzee.
Learning math should be fun and hands on! Students need to practice math facts but math fact sheets can evoke groans and at time panic in students who lack confidence in math fact skills.
I want to provide my students with fun math games to build math fact confidence while practicing at the same time.
I teach at a Title I school in Marshfield, MA. My students come from a variety of backgrounds with varying math abilities. This coming school year my classroom will be made up of a diverse group of learners ages 7 and 8.
Each year students enter the classroom full of energy and readiness to learn. I work hard to create a classroom that feels safe and comfortable for all students. Wether you are a superstar math student, or struggling to master your math facts, I want all students to feel empowered to be the best student they can be while knowing they are supported and encouraged to do their personal best. I want my classroom to be a place where all students feel they have a home away from home. A space where they can do their best learning.
My Project
Practicing math facts is always better when it comes in the form of a game. Molkky is a class favorite, with students clamoring to get to that outdoor math station each time we play. Even my most reluctant math student can't wait to play Molkky, adding up their score is part of the fun. Just imagine their enthusiasm with enough sets of Molkky for everyone to play at once?
Building math confidence can be difficult, but with math games students have a positive experience working with numbers.
Seeing smiles on student's faces and their positive attitude during game time tells me something is right about practicing math using games. Math games are also a way to reach struggling students in math. They are engaged and excited to play. When it comes time to add up scores or figure out a number sentence, they are willing and excited to do so, many times independently.
This boost in math self confidence is what I want to instill in all my students regardless of ability. While I am there to help guide and support them if they are stuck, math games provide a low pressure situation where math is involved.
Through both outdoor games like Molkky and Yardzee, or an indoor game of Moby, students have the opportunity to practice math skills; adding numbers and critical thinking, in a fun and engaging way. Another bonus of the outdoor games is it gets students up and moving. Math with a movement break, now that is a win, win!
