Help me give my students math manipulatives that will help them to know their second and third grade math standards, during lessons and small group/independent time.
My students are exceptional (I mean aren't they all?)! We are a third grade math class that enjoys making learning a fun and inviting part of our life. These students will take anything they have and run with it, from writing their own story problems to having fun with their science Hypotheses.
Our school is located in Sandy, Utah.
We are a duel immersion school; however, my classes are the neighborhood classes and do not participate in Spanish daily as our other half of the school does. Regardless, we love to learn, play, and create.
COVID has impacted our classrooms and school greatly. Students who were in person missed many days due to quarantine or students who were online learning or home-schooled have many deficits and holes in their math standards that need to be filled. It is becoming increasingly difficult to have students meet third grade standards on level when they came to third grade, still missing second grade material.
My Project
Due to COVID-19, most of my third graders came into third grade with many deficits in their math. We started the year with multiplication and division, but I could quickly see that I still had students that needed simple counting help in order to do repeated addition. Counters to be used like the Unifix cubes are used by students in order to have something tangible to count with, make groups, etc. The base-ten blocks will be used with those students who are not grasping the idea of addition or subtraction with regrouping. In third grade, we begin with three-digit addition and subtraction, meaning we are assuming they can do two-digit addition and subtraction from second grade. However, most of my students are unable to do this, so we are going back in our standards to fill these gaps.
Some of the manipulatives I have asked for are for other units we teach in math, like fractions (fraction cubes), arrays (counters and square foam), area, and perimeter (square foam pieces).
I also have asked for some fun games, like multiplication and division flash cards, interactive video-like game, POOp it multiplication game, etc. that I will have students do during independent learning or small groups. I hope to make math more fun and engage students in different ways then just paper and pencil. The last thing on my list is a set of plastic bins in order to keep the manipulatives organized and within easy access to all my students.
Math manipulatives aid students in making abstract ideas concrete, as well as making learning math fun and enjoyable instead of the time-old "I don't like math." I can't wait to engage my students in our math lessons in order to hear "Math is fun!" and "I get it!".
