My students live in a beautiful rural area, with a high rate of poverty. Many different issues come up with high poverty, but I would like for my students to have the tools and resources they need to be successful in school, which will lead to success after school.
My students are hardworking!
It never ceases to amaze me in the obstacles my students overcome each and every day in order to be their best selves. The students in my class have a lack of confidence in their math skills for various reasons, some of which are moving from school to school and family to family and lack of interest. This project will help my students understand how and why math works the way that it does.
My Project
My students want to learn how to be mathematicians. However, math has a bad rap for being boring and hard. I inherited a room that has little to no manipulatives for students to use. I believe that using manipulatives is crucial for a student's understanding of math.
My students are much more engaged in the lesson if they can use their hands as they are learning.
With gaining multiple different manipulatives in the classroom, students will be able to choose something that helps them make sense of a math problem.
This project will help my students understand and master important math concepts, such as place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and we will be able to start their understanding of division. 5th grade is a year that is lived below one. Both fractions and decimals will be the main focus of the year. The base ten blocks will help students by allowing them to see the numbers and explore place value. The tiles will allow students to explore fractions by being able to move pieces around. The cubes will be used to help students as they begin to explore the concept of volume.
