My students attend an inner city school whose student body is diverse, both academically and socioeconomically. Many of the students are English Language Learners and some were living in refugee camps. They have left their home countries for better lives and education.
My students are full of potential and eager to learn.
They come to school each and every day with smiles on their faces. They do not have the required materials at home to practice what is being taught in the classroom. The instruction they receive in my classroom is usually the extent of their learning time. The support at home is little to none, mostly due to the lack of materials. They need to develop the skills to keep up in a world that is full of literacy.
My Project
Math manipulatives are used on a daily basis in our classroom. Manipulatives are used with every skill that is being taught in our class. They are great teaching tools that are used throughout the year. Putting math manipulatives into my students hands will allow them to solve problems and expand their thinking. They will increase their interest and enjoyment of mathematics in their daily lives.
Each student will have their own manipulatives to explore their learning of math concepts such as measurement, fractions, and place value.
Math is an essential part of learning and manipulatives have the additional advantage of engaging my students.
