My students need math manipulatives such as dominoes, dice, ten frames and pom poms (to use for counting) that will help to create a hands-on approach to learning.
We start off each day in our classroom with math, which means that math instruction often sets the mood for our day. With the right math manipulatives and tools, each day would be a new day to have fun learning!
I teach a very active group of wonderful first grade students.
They love movement and activity in the classroom and have so much fun any time they get to work with special manipulatives. They are a very bright, creative, and fast-thinking group of students. They have such great imaginations and are constantly surprising me with how much they know! Many of my students learn best when they have visual representations of what they are learning. It is important, especially in math, for students to feel confident in their abilities. When my students have a solid way of showing and applying what they learn, they are more confident and excited about their work. At our school we are working hard to specifically improve math scores and to increase student interest in math. We have so many great students who just need the right tools in order to make strong connections with the math lessons that they learn!
My Project
These math tools would help my students to have resources to support their learning. There are so many great math games and lessons that can be taught to support addition, subtraction, place value, counting, and much more! These manipulatives would give me the materials to allow my students to explore and apply what they learn in a hands-on way. Many students struggle with learning math concepts simply because they feel that math is boring and monotonous. The use of math manipulatives is a vital part in giving students the chance to learn math in new ways and in awakening an excitement towards math in our students. My students will be able to use the dice and dominoes to help them with subtilizing numbers (recognizing how many dots in a pattern) and to guide their learning of basic addition and subtraction facts. The pom-poms and pipe cleaners will be used for a variety of counting and grouping games that will support their knowledge of math facts and their learning of place value.
There are so many lessons that I teach that I could add on to if I had the right supplies.
Donating to this project would give many of my students a different way to approach math that would help encourage their success. If I ask any of my students what their favorite math lessons are, they always list the lessons where they were able to work with dice, cubes, or other math tools. With the supplies from this project, my students would be able to have even more options of math tools to work with.
