I teach at a Title I school. Most of my students qualify for free lunch and do not have the money for even the basic supplies.
Due to covid, students are sometimes forced to miss up to 10 days of instruction in school.
My students still strive to achieve success every day, even though most of them were virtual for second grade. These students have had to work very hard to catch up from learning lost last year in order to meet grade-level expectations. I try to give them every advantage that I can to ensure their success.
Math is a skill that requires hands-on practice in order for students to master the concepts. I want to buy a few items to help me provided my students hands-on practice with a variety of math skills. The double sided counters would be used for students to create arrays to help them solve multiplication an division problems. My students have had a difficult time mastering arrays because they have only seen them in picture form. Counters would allow them to create arrays that they can touch to count easier.
Patterns can be a fun skill provided you have the right materials.
I would like to purchase pattern blocks to allow students to learn how many different repeating and growing patterns they can make using the same shapes. Students are expected to create their own pattern, describe what is repeating, and identify the missing shape. These pattern blocks would make it more fun and engaging than pictures on a paper that they would need to draw.
Lastly, I would love to purchase geoboards that would be used to help students create different shapes. Students are expected to name the shape based on its number of sides. What funnier way to learn about shapes than by using rubber bands? Students who enjoy learning math master their math skills easier. Thank you for giving my students that opportunity.
