My Students

My day is never a typical day. I teach students with autism and autism spectrum disorders. The biggest challenge in my classroom is keeping my students engaged in learning. Our school has over sixteen different languages spoken and seventy-four percent of the students are at risk of educational failure. I work with students who have special needs and their abilities vary from non-verbal to socially isolated. Students in my program do not learn through traditional teaching methods. Their materials need to be engaging and offer my students spatial awareness to stay on task.

My students are eager to learn; I just need materials to help them.

My students face a variety of learning and behavioral challenges every day. They have diverse learning skills and needs. Having hands-on learning materials for my students to use when they are struggling to learn is essential.

My Project

I have students who have special needs and their abilities vary from non-verbal to socially isolated. Students in my program do not learn through traditional teaching methods. They need hands-on learning and role-playing situations so they can make real-world connections. Students in my program are eager to learn, they thrive on gaining knowledge, however, I need materials in which they can build their own knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The joy my students have when they see all the amazing things the world has to offer is priceless. The materials I have asked for will increase my students' knowledge of varying math concepts. My students will use these materials to build language, social, math, and vocabulary skills. My students have diverse needs and do not learn in a traditional manner. Each student in my classroom learns in their own unique way.

The table top double sided easel with help my students learn addition facts, while the number line floor puzzle, sorting puzzle, and ATM machine will help my students build math concepts to real world applications.

The number puzzle cards, magnetic ten frames, and fine motor hedgehog will help my students learn different quantities of items while building their fine motor skills. The different sorting activities will help my students learn about attributes, colors, and quantities of items. Each of these components are crucial to everyday life. My students need to learn about math in their everyday life and help to be independent citizens in our community.
