I am starting on a new journey at a brand new school - our doors will be open on July 10th! I have met a handful of my students at different community meetings, but not all of them. While teaching in this new school will be a huge change in demographics from my previous schools, one thing will remain the same.
The majority of students come to school feeling like they aren't "good" at math or that they aren't "math people".
I am hoping to change the mindsets of my students to help them see that we are all "math people"!
My Project
In order for students to fully embrace a mathematical mindset they must feel like they are in a safe and comfortable environment. Students learn best when they have options, and we all know that 6th graders need room to move about and learn!
Small carpeted areas in the classroom allow students to spread out for learning and provide areas for collaboration with their peers.
Giving students options for seating with the seat cushions and exercise balls allows them even more options to engage in math comfortably.
Creating a homey, comfortable environment helps students feel welcome. When students enter an environment that is catered to their needs, they automatically feel welcome and that the learning space is meant for them.
