My students love to get out of their seats and move!! They even love hands-on learning and trying out new research based strategies/activities in the classroom. In order to accommodate large class sizes and a large spectrum of abilities, I need more math picture books in order to help meet the needs of ALL students in my classroom as well to adding a "twist" to my instruction. These pictures books are a great way to bridge the gap between reading and math. The students will be able to use their everyday reading skills to become more literate in mathematics.
"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new." stated by Albert Einstein!
I love to switch things up and try new things with the students. Understanding that we are not all the same, and we will make mistakes, is just one of the additional lessons learned through working in small groups/stations. Breakout/Escape the classroom will give students the opportunity to solve problems and use critical thinking alongside of increasing their math skills.
My Project
My project has do with taking my teaching and instruction to the next step. In math it is not only about learning skills but in order to become mathematically literate is being able to apply math in the real world. In 6th grade students are not exposed to all the wonderful things in the world that they will need math for. Pictures can help real world math come alive! Not only is incorporating literacy important so is vocabulary. Some of the other materials will help build my word work station in order to increase mathematical vocabulary. Both the picture books and vocabulary materials will increase the engagement within the classroom!
