I teach in a very small rural high school. Most of our students come from blue collar families who work either on farms or in local mills. In our school we try very hard to encourage as many students as possible to attend college. One of the pitfalls for some students is the math requirements. State math standards dictate that students use real world data to solve problems. Currently this is a component in Algebra I, Algebra II, Advanced Functions and Modeling and AP Calculus. I am writing this proposal to ask for a CBL (Calculator Based Laboratory) made by Texas Instruments to use in the classes I teach and also to share with my fellow math teachers (there are only five of us). The use of the technology, I believe, will enhance the learning of math in my classroom.
With a growing emphasis on real world problem solving in our math curriculums and NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) standards students need hands on experience. With a CBL students will be able to generate data from multiple sources and use the data to solve problems. The CBL contains different types of probes which will allow students to explore the world of math and science around them by collecting real world data from sources such as motion, light and temperature. This is compatible with the graphing calculators we already have. With school budgets stretched to their maximum I am seeking outside sources to improve the technology in our school.
Students should be empowered with the tools they need for success. Helping students develop their understanding of complicated concepts through the use of technology is imperative. Studies have shown that students develop a more thorough understanding and retain information longer if they are able to use a hands on approach.
