Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing young men and women. Many of my students that come to me are very intelligent and willing to learn, but the majority of all my students are very uncertain about their academic ability and they begin to doubt themselves even though they are capable. Many of the students come from very low-income households with the majority of the student's parents at or below the poverty level. I've noticed that my students are kinesthetic learners and the possibility of being able to demonstrate and be hands on with the material will lead to higher chance of success.
My Project
My students need a Dremel 3D Printer to foster creativity and ignite their critical thinking ability. I can not find a time that is more in dire need of creativity and critical thinking than at the high school level. My students range are in classes from Geometry to Calculus. Some of the hardest concepts to grasp and problems to solve require the ability to see mathematics in a new lens.
The Dremel 3D Printer can enable a new lens for my students to see mathematics.
It allows us to see concepts in tangible ways that were impossible before. In geometry we can analyze questions about adding triangular structure to a 3D structure such as tetrahedron. Not only will we be able to analyze the structure for a mathematical standpoint but also a model standpoint.
In Calculus, when looking at integration and rotation about axis, we can create a model for students to create a connection and students can create models of an integrand that they create.
A professor once told me, that the need for technology must not be for glamour purpose nor should it be for engagement. The need for technology is to be transformative in the way students learn. The technology should enhance the students learning in a way that can not be done without. I believe a Dremel 3D printer would allow my students to see concepts in ways unattainable without. It is for these reason, I graciously ask for any donations to help obtain something that can have an impact on students ability to learn for years to come.
