Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley.
It is filled with a richly diverse population of students.
In my classroom alone I have students whose parents speak Hmong, Cambodian, English, Spanish and Lao. My students bring a wealth of culture, experience, and information to my classroom. Because it is mostly an immigrant population our students are also victims of extreme poverty. This fact makes it difficult for their parents to provide the background knowledge and technology use needed to thrive in school today. Our district superintendent recently said that eighty-seven percent of our students live in poverty. Our school provides all students with free breakfast and lunch to fill their bellies. As a classroom teacher I am trying to help reverse the toll that poverty takes on graduation rates and quality of life.
My Project
Being a first grade teacher I am constantly trying to find ways to make math more engaging. This year my first grade team and I have been trying out interactive math centers. We are able to work with small groups of students to make sure they understand the concepts we are teaching. The students not working with the teacher will practice strategies they have learned in different hands-on stations. I want to introduce a center using technology with the latest applications. The iPad I am asking for will add one more station to our interactive centers. They will do basic coding, math fluency practice, and math software our school has already purchased. The iPad’s will also be used for multi-media presentations and to take pictures for projects. Hopefully with repeated exposure to technology my students will gain much needed experience with computers. This will help them because all of the exams they will be taking after 2nd grade will be tablet or computer based. My school district has been struggling to bring their math test scores up and I’m hoping this add to our math knowledge.
