I teach at an alternative school. My students are at risk of not graduating from high school, and we are their last chance to keep them from dropping out. My principal describes our school as the "intensive care unit of high schools."
Many of our students will be the first in their family to graduate from high school.
These students have to apply to attend to our school and are very serious about making up lost credit and doing whatever it takes to finish high school. The school's mascot is a Phoenix which symbolizes our students as they rise from the ashes of their past, overcoming their challenges to graduate from high school and go on to continue their education.
My Project
My students struggle academically, especially with organization, note taking, and memory skills. Each student will get a spiral and dividers to create their very own interactive notebook. Interactive notebooks teach students to set up and use a table of contents. We will use the glue sticks and tape to attach all of our notes, worksheets, warm ups and activities in our notebook. By keeping everything in one place it helps my students stay organized. It also teaches them study skills because they can easily find their notes when they have a question. We will use the markers and highlighters when taking notes to color code information that is the same in tables, graphs, equations, and word problems helping students make connections between the different representations. Interactive notebooks teach my students the skills they need to succeed in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.
Some of my students have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Most of my students struggle to find money to buy basic school supplies at the beginning of the school year. This fall that struggle will be even greater because of the money they are still spending on recovering from Harvey. If I can supply each student with the supplies for Algebra, including a spiral and highlighters, it will easy the stress that the start of school brings when you are short on cash.
