Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all major subjects in a fouth and fifth grade combined class at a highly diverse progressive school in the East Village of New York City. Approximately 68% of the students receive free lunch, as well as a number of other social services, and spend the majority of their time within their neighborhoods. Our school is committed to contributing to the community and to developing our students' understanding of the experiences of others, as well as their responsibility as members of society.
Central to my school's philosophy is incorporating educational experiences into times of play and student exploration. For this reason, I end most days with a period of choice time. During this time, students can choose from a variety of activities in which to participate. The activities which invariably capture the student's attention most deeply are those which challenge them to engage their problem solving and strategy abilities - the bulk of which are board and card games. As a teacher, this thrills me, as I see my students using and strengthening a variety of their math and spatial reasoning skills. In addition, these games provide my students with opportunities to work cooperatively and engage in healthy competition with their peers.
My assortment of well-loved games continues to be enjoyed frequently. However, I would like to replace some games which are bordering on no longer usable (missing, broken, or just highly worn pieces). In addition, I would like to enhance my collection of games by adding a number of math-based strategy, pattern, shape, and brainteaser games. I believe that by increasing the number of games as well as the variety of games that are available to my students, I will also be able to increase the number of students who will engage in this deep, problem solving style of thinking each day.
In addition to the 23 students in my class, once a week all of the students in my school (pre-kindergarten through sixth grade) participate in a school-wide choice time. Students who elect to be in my room during that time are there specifically to play math games and solve brainteaser and challenge problems. These materials would be available to all of these students this year and in years to come. I know that by adding these resources to my classroom, I will be able to offer my current and future students increased opportunities to stretch their thinking.
