This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is an inclusion classroom where students with disabilities are instructed with their peers. I work collaboratively with the special educator assigned to third grade. We work together to meet the needs of all students and believe they will succeed.
My school is in a very diverse, urban community.
The dedicated teachers and staff are hard workers who do their best to inspire students to reach their goals. The school is a Title I school that serves students in grades Pre-K through 5th. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
Readers Theater projects help students bring literature to life. By creating puppets, drawing scenery, and writing dialogue, students gain a better understanding of narrative elements found in the books they read in class. Summarizing skills are practiced as students work together to create a script to highlight important plot events. In addition, students become more comfortable with public speaking when they are able to perform in front of peers on a regular basis.
With these craft items, students will have the opportunity to use their creativity to make the characters from books come alive.
After performing for their classmates, they will be able to take their puppets/costumes home to share with family members as well. This improves student engagement as well as parental involvement.
