Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work with middle school students who range from illiterate to college level. We don't have a school library and the local public library leaves much to be desired so my classroom is their best bet for finding books that will broaden their horizons and foster their love of reading.
My students come to YES because their current district is failing.
At YES, Youth Engaged in Service, we ask students to become leaders within their community. As leaders, they need to be able access multiple genres of literature as well as non-fiction books that will open their eyes and inspire them to see beyond the limitations that their community often sets on them.
At YES 100% of our graduating seniors will go on to a 4 year college or university. At our campus, the vast majority of our students come in at an average of 3 grade levels behind in reading. Our goal is to not only make up for lost time, but to also push our students further in order for them to gain the competitive edge they need against their more affluent peers. In order to do this we must make information and resources equally accessible, organized, and appealing.
My Project
Due to generous donations our classroom library is (thankfully!) growing. Unfortunately, the resources in our district are slim and the dilapidated bookcases we have are now overflowing with books. It is becoming next to impossible for students to find books that interests them without creating an avalanche. We are currently collecting color coded baskets and labeling each book with the corresponding reading levels so that students have been empowered to find books that are interesting to and appropriate for them. Our next step is finding a way to display these new systems and engaging books and this is where you come in!
Having a classroom library that is organized, appealing, and accessible will empower my students to be responsible for their own growth in reading.
Reading opens doors to worlds beyond our own limited experiences and inspires us to aim for newer, higher goals. Our classroom library will foster my students development as leaders in our community and open doors that they never even knew existed.
