Making Lifelong Readers

My Students

xzI have a total of 28 students, 16 girls and 12 boys. Covid has definitely impacted our class in many ways. Students have holes in their learning that we are working so hard to fill in but not without challenges, as we continue to have online days because of Covid numbers. In 4th grade we do book challenges throughout the year where students can participate in a party if they've read a certain number of books. They love to look at the Scholastic Book order and get excited about what is coming out. The librarian also gets them excited about reading. Over the years I've found that one of the best ways to get kids excited about reading is to be be introducing them to new books and get them talking about what they're reading.

My Project

There is such a need today to get kids reading and loving to read. Fourth grade is such a critical age for this as they are starting to dive into chapter books with captivating story lines. Getting good, current literature in their hands will help bridge the gap with so much that has been lost through learning during the pandemic.

Surrounding kids with a wide range of books that will challenge, entertain and open their eyes to new places, ideas and experiences will help them become life long readers.

In fourth grade, at our school, we do book challenges throughout the year to get students excited about reading. We ask them to read 30 chapter books throughout the year. If we can get students to start and finish books, then they start to see the fun adventure that a book can take them on.

Modeling a love for reading is also important. I plan to use many of these books as read alouds in my classroom, where we will get a shared experience of enjoying these books together. Some of these books will be used for book groups where kids will get to read and discuss a book that they're reading in a small group. These books will benefit students in countless ways.
