Making Learning Visual! A Deaf Child's Dream
My students need an iPad to make reading, science, math, and social studies visual to accommodate their learning needs.
Imagine when you were in school, learning about photosynthesis without hearing the words or seeing the process occur. Help my students not only see the concepts, but control it with their fingertips!
My students are beautiful children who are bound and determined to not let their loss of hearing stand in their way.
They dream of attending Gallaudet University, The Rochester Institute of Technology, Harvard! They communicate using the most beautiful and expressive language, American Sign Language (ASL). They dream of becoming actors and astronauts, basketball players and singers. Some students have no hearing and some can speak with help from their cochlear implants. Regardless of their disability, they are involved throughout the school. They participate with hearing peers from the monkey bars on the playground to featured roles on the Cougar Morning News. Colson Elementary has an open-minded faculty and staff determined to provide access to every opportunity the school offers. Our school is host to over 35 Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, over 600 students, and 58 faculty members...but ask any student at the school...we're all one big family.
An iPad would be an invaluable resource in my classroom. It would give students the opportunity to see the English language on a tactile surface that they can manipulate. They can learn to engage in a text the way a traditional text book could never allow. There are hundreds of educational apps waiting to be implemented in my classroom. This device could be used across all subject areas. It will provide a visual addition to a challenging and rigorous curriculum. They can learn so much from just this tiny bit of technology!
This donation will change my students lives.
Many of them have no idea what an iPad is or even many of the technological advances made for the benefit of deaf people. Studies have shown that to be successful in today's age you must be able to use technology; this donation will provide just that. It will serve as a stepping stone, opening a window into an ever changing technological world.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
