Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a teacher in a small district in Eastern Oregon. My school serves approximately 700 students in grades K-5, and provide a free breakfast and lunch program. We are one of the top poverty-stricken school districts in the state of Oregon. The majority of our students receive ELL services. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they face, I provide students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Despite many obstacles in their lives, our students LOVE to learn and be at school!
Second graders love to move, they love to read, and love lots of positive attention. My students are faced with many experiences that may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us think just occur. From the minute my students walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can control their experiences while in my classroom. My goal is to inspire my students to continue on a path of academic excellence!
My Project
I love teaching 2nd grade and working with my 2nd grade team every day. We are always looking for ways to enhance our teaching and creating a more engaging environment for our students. My team has always loved music since we were young and each of us can say that it has impacted who we are today. Currently, our school doesn't have a Music program in 2nd-5th grades and we have witnessed the impact this has created. This year my team decided to take a chance and incorporate music into our classroom by playing ukuleles so that we can inspire the love for music. We realized that music is a powerful tool for learning new concepts or memorizing information. We are now in hopes to teach our students how to play. We are excited that we just got a project funded for 10 ukuleles, which is an amazing start. We are in hopes to add to the collection so more students and classes can participate.
Teaching music will help build confidence, encourage independence, and help them appreciate the arts in the future or give them an outlet to express themselves.
Through ukulele lessons, a child learns about beat, harmony, melody, rhythm, and tempo. They will also learn vocabulary and new learning through song. It would be amazing to give my students a chance to play on their own.
