My students need options for seating that are comfortable and allow student choice and movement. My students also need a big book stand so they can more easily access our big book texts.
I teach at a title one school in Knoxville, TN. We are a fine arts magnet school, offering our students unique opportunities to be exposed to the arts at a young age. I have the privilege of working with a group of about 20 kindergarteners.
My classroom is my students' first exposure to the public school system and I want to make our classroom feel like a home away from home where my students are excited to come and learn together each day!
My Project
My goal is to provide a flexible seating classroom environment that feels like a home away from home for these new kindergarten children who are entering school for the first time. Research is behind the idea, stating that flexible seating can provide an opportunity for more movement throughout the classroom, better oxygen flow to the brain from movement, release of excess energy, more motivation, and the list goes on and on. So many things have changed/grown in education over the years, including our students, so I wholeheartedly believe our classrooms should grow right along with them!
All students have unique needs and having a classroom that gives students a variety of different ways to work and learn helps meet each child's needs as they fall in love with learning and school.
In addition to non-traditional seating opportunities, my students also need a big book easel so they can more easily access many of our big book texts in the classroom.This will allow students opportunities to easily access the text independently during their work time and give them a better way to engage with the text when we are working with it together as a group.
